How the Care Act Can Help
You and Your Loved Ones
Every day in Illinois, 1.5 million family caregivers perform a labor of love by caring for older parents, spouses, and other loved ones—unpaid care valued at more than $18 billion annually. A new law, the CARE Act, went into effect January 27, 2016, and supports family caregivers when their loved ones go into the hospital and as they transition home.
The law requires hospitals to:
1. Provide your loved one the opportunity to designate a family caregiver in the medical record upon admission.
2. Notify the family caregiver when your loved one is to be discharged to another facility or back home.
3. Train family caregivers on the medical tasks that they will need to perform at home.
